The "disinhibiting" effect of anonymity does indeed cut both ways, Leon. It encourages some people to be more open, warm, and intimate... and it encourages others to be cruel. In some net niches the "meanness" becomes the norm, so it's best for most (mature) people to steer clear of those places. In my experience, a very large portion of that mean behavior comes from adolescents who are enamored with the opportunity to let loose their frustrations. I try to keep in mind the saying, "sticks and stones will break my bones, but (typed) words can never hurt me" (unless I let them).
