I think it can be very helpful for people in online encounters to open up about themselves because they feel more comfortable due to the anonymity. It's a great first step. Also, if they are unable to discuss something in a f2f encounter, there's probably some type of resistance at work - something they're worried/anxious about that could be very helpful to examine. Usually, it is related to issues concerning shame and guilt.Discussing something only in an anonymous environment might not give them the chance to understand and overcome those feelings.
