Thanks for your post, Tim.Since we're in the mood to sound "academic!"....
The idea of polarities in personality dynamics can be found in many psychological theories, eastern and western. In psychoanalytic theory, the notions of intrapsychic conflict, and of an intrapsychic world comprised of internalizations and introjects, often rely on this concept of a dynamic interplay of polarities. Psychoanalytic theory has extensively explored how these polarities get transformed into externally manifested personality dynamics and into transference reactions involving other people. How we act manifestly on the internet ("persona"), how we think and feel internally, and how we perceive and react to others, are all intertwined, often through dynamic polarities - including polarities in which our dislike of online others reflects a warding off of some internal aspect of ourselves (the "shadow")
Now, I've read Jung and have enjoyed his work, but I'd be lying if I said I was an expert on him. IMHO, if he didn't say these things about persona, shadows, and polarities, he should have!
