This is very interesting research! There is quite a bit of literature in the field of mental imagery that focuses on individual differences in visualizing ability - for example, Richardson's early work on "visualizers" versus "verbalizers." My guess is that these individual differences have a lot to do with how well some people can immerse into VR, while others cannot.
