Marie, you sound like a good example of a person who used online socialzing as a benefit in its own right as well as in the development of your offline life. Good for you! Pick a dissertation topic that you find interesting, but also one that your committee finds acceptable. If you can find a dissertation advisor who has an interest or even an expertise in a certain area of online life, follow that professor's advice. Some people in academia are skeptical about internet research, so try to find faculty who are accepting of the topic. There's quite a bit now that's been written about online romances, chat rooms, and cyberspace relationships in general. Try to focus on a topic area that is a bit off the beaten path, and one that is specific enough that you won't be overwhelmed with too many broad issues. Good luck!
