Boy...glad to find this site...! Someone to talk to about the psychological aspects..finally. Based on my own experiential research..I think lurking is done for a variety of reasons: 1) People don't understand the medium, so they "sit" by and watch and learn. Lurking is easier online..easier than real life...and is simply a way for people to get more information due to other visual etc. cues. Agreed, people who are have the "lurking trait", are likely lurkers in cyberlife too..:)
2) They are voyeurs and want to watch others licking and gropling eachother ! LOL
3) They don't have anything to say
4) The screen is moving to fast they are confused and simply can't type or think fast enough (for whatever reason) to keep up with the conversation.
5) They are "spying" on a potential "cyberlover" to see if they are cheating.
