>>I think this aspect - the ability to connect with other PEOPLE - is what makes the internet so powerful and fascinating.
In Russia there is very famous game named FIDO. I think you know about FIDONet (It is american invention! - but it is incredible popular in Russia :) - so this strategy game is written for fun and it is an imitation of life of FIDONetter. You start as BBS user, and need to become popular (improve your 'reputation'), get better software and upgrade your computer, call to BBS'es, get point and node address, get good job and to win the game - become Network Coordinator. The interface fully imitates usual programs with which fidonetter interacts. You can ever call to friends etc... But, when I play this game, sometimes I laugh on myself and swith to my _real_ FIDONet programms, call to real stations and write messages to REAL people. I think here is big difference between game and reality... that we need to feel that we communicate with people, but not with game phantoms... But where is the difference? Only in my feeling... that the person to whom I'm writing now isn't virtual, but he is somebody who lives in this world... I need this belief and this feeling... that it is not a game.
