    The differences between synchronous (chat, video conferencing) and asynchronous (e-mail, newsgroup) conversations are interesting. Surely there is more time to think and compose one's reply in asynchronous communication. Yet in synchronous communication, people often report they feel a greater sense of "presence" of the other person... in part because you are both there, AT THE SAME TIME, talking with each other.
