Online Communities & Web Sites

As with many social groups it seems group(s) (often called a "clique") forms on many newsgroups. It appears to me there is an "initiation" of some sort in virtually all online communities.
As a newcomer to a newsgroup, I was unpleasantly surprised at the antagonistic "welcome" I received from one of its groups.
As with Tony C., the experience prompted me to develop a web site. The site as initially constructed was intended to permit me to "vent." I've been modifying it since, in the hope it might be beneficial to other newcomers to Usenet.

Having read many of Dr. Suler's comments related to the online world, I'm curious if you (Dr. Suler) have had much exposure to "chat" (IRC) or Usenet (newsgroups).
