You're right, scurryless, that some online groups can be very clique-ish. And that's why some people prefer to lurk, because they feel like they don't fit in. As a general rule, it's a good idea to lurk for awhile when you enter a group in order to get a feel for how the group works. And when you finally speak up, it's usually a good idea to introduce yourself in a friendly but respectful sort of way. If you get a hostile reaction, or no reaction at all, consider the possibility that the group is not for you.
