    innate mechanisms vs. appraisal
    by Don Nathanson, Faculty, 4/3/97

How do you explain the observation that the infant cries on its emergence from the birth canal? Is it possible that it has appraised the world as a vale of tears?

All of the innate affects described by Tomkins are visible on the face of the infant long before the kind of cognitive structures you describe are possible.
