Editor's Note: Johanna Krout Tabin, Ph.D. is a founding member of the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis. Her publications range from the study of universal symbolism, treatment outcome, and the relationship between mechanisms of defense and mental retardation--to theoretical and clinical subjects in psychoanalysis. Her publications include a widely praised book (On the Way to Self: Ego and Early Oedipal Development from Columbia University Press). Dr. Tabin's perceptions are guided by a developmental framework and draw upon the other major theoretical streams in psychoanalysis.
