Parent's who spank or physically abuse their children are acting out of frustration in a mode similar to one they automatically remember from their childhood: spare the rod and spoil the child. Plain and simple, spanking hurts both physically and psychologically. Perhaps the meanest/cruelest form of spanking is that from a father to his daughter. This is no different from a high school male beating up on a lower school boy or girl -- in most school districts this type of offense receives grave reprimand and likely the perpetrator faces suspension or expulsion. Parents unable to control their anger should seek counseling or other state provided help to deal with their deep seated emotional problems. Children living in such a household would do better in a state home or foster home. No child needs to remain with an abusive parent any more than a wife should continuing living with an abusive husband. Gerry Reinhart-Waller
