Adler did not treat symptoms, like overindulgence, directly--he sought to uncover the hidden inferiority feelings, the style of life and the compensatory, ficitonal goal of the individual, and use them as foundations for encouragment to move in a new direction. There are also distinctions that need to be made between the indulgence of a parent and the self-indulgence of a child. Read "The Education of Children," by Alfred Adler.
