Adler did not "treat disorders" directly. His therapeutic approach was to look for the purpose behind the symptoms, and focus on changing the style of life and the unconscious, fictional, final goal that were "using" the disorder to avoid specific tasks and difficulties in life. Adler's core therapeutic strategy in the treatment of all disorders, was the encouragement to overcome difficulties. He found that symptoms often disappeared (without direct intervention) after a patient experienced an increase in courage, confidence, and a feeling of community. Read "The Unity and Diversity of Mental Disorders" in "The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler," edited by Heinz and Rowena Ansbacher.
