Classical Adlerian theory and practice is a synthesis of science and art. A helpful perspective on the myriad of mental constructs that we invent to explain phenomena was provided by Hans Vaihinger in his remarkable book "The Philosophy of As If." Vaihinger describes the dynamics of useful scientific, legal, mathematical, monetary, and aesthetic (as well as other) fictions.
