The Classical Adlerian approach is a values-based therapy that focuses on the development of cooperation, social contribution, and optimal human functioning. Cognition, affect, and behavior are viewed as subordinate functions of an unconcious fictional final goal and style of life. We offer insight into these two core personality constructs, and formulate strategies to modify or dissolve them. Behavior therapy, although modestly effective in some cases (especially with mentally retarded clients), is value-free, has no vision of optimal development, minimizes or ignores cognitive and affective functioning, and deals exclusively with observable behavior and environmental reinforcement. (Simple behavioral change, may not dissolve the uncooperative intentions of a client, only switch the forms of expression.) Behavioral psychology has created a revolution in military training, apparently improving the firing and kill ratios of combat troops. There are some appalling implications of the impact of violent video and computer games (operant conditioning) on the aggressive behavior of young children.
