ADD, especially with hyperactivity, could also be viewed in a purposive framework, evaluating the impact on other people. It could be a very effective way to keep others occupied, annoy people, avoid responsibility, or sustain the center of attention. The choice of symptoms usually fits the sensitivities or vulnerablities of the individual's immediate family or social circle. It is interesting to explore all areas of an individual's functioning to see if the ADD is global or selective. Often, children who "cannot" concentrate in school, have no problem concentrating on their favorite games or in sports. From an Adlerian perspective, any symptoms need to be checked to see if they serve the unconscious, fictional, final goal.
