    Joelle,

There are some interesting early influences related to birth order and organ inferiority. See my article "Was Adler Influenced by Froebel?" at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hstein/froebel.htm . World War I apparently had great impact on Adler's development of the ideal of the feeling of community.

Read The Drive for Self: Alfred Adler and the Founding of Individual Psychology, by Edward Hoffman and The Discovery of the Unconscious, by Henri Ellenberger.
