The Collected Works of Lydia Sicher: An Adlerian Perspective, just received a rave review from the Adlerian journal, Individual Psychology (Sept. '97, page 351).

The Collected Works of Lydia Sicher: An Adlerian Perspective. Edited by Adele K. Davidson. (Ft. Bragg, CA: QED Press, 1991. ISBN 0-936609-22-2. pp. 572.)
Lydia Sicher was a physician and therapist who remained absolutely loyal to the teachings of Alfred Adler. This volume of her works is a collection of articles she published in English, some works translated from German publications, as well as transcriptions of her lectures, which the editor transcribed, edited, and organized. The articles are grouped according to topics such as social interest, style of life, responsibility, early recollections, and many themes (e.g., social conscience, blame, self-esteem, growing old and death, courage), as well as clinical categories/cases that are as contemporary today as they were in Sicher's time.
Sicher's writing style is bare bones, direct, meaty, and as content-full as could be. Her style of writing is also very reminiscent of the manner in which Adler wrote. This, in part, may be a reflection of the facts that many of her works were translated from German and that, just like Adler, Sicher was a dynamic public speaker.
I agree with Henry T. Stein, Ph.D., the director of the Alfred Adler Institute of San Francisco, who wrote in the book's foreword, "Adler's ideas seem clear and simple at first, but deeper study reveals them to be complex and profound" (p. xii).
Today, Adler's ideas are everywhere. A variety of clinicians, researchers, and theoreticians from different disciplines write about and conclude what Adler postulated without giving him recognition. The more this continues, the more important Sicher's work becomes.
This volume is must reading for Adlerian scholars who want to revisit Adler and be renewed with the spirit of his profound ideas expressed in elegant simplicity by one of his most ardent followers. A true delight!
