Adler believed that early childhood training in cooperation, and the development of a feeling of community, would prevent a host of later problems in adolescence and adulthood. Training the parents and teachers of pre-school children would be an effective beginning. I also believe that discussing values and philosophy Socratically with young children could provide the stimulating intellectual/emotional climate that might be missing from their homes. The task of developing the feeling of community, for "the population as a whole," becomes a more formidable challenge. Many of our educational and business environments promote self-interest and indifference to the needs of others.
