Dr. Stein
I realize my choice of words was not the best. What I referred to when I said that Adler "put the dark side in perspective", was my understanding that Adler acknowledged that every human being has the innate capability to behave in ways that are selfish, aggressive or otherwise 'negative', as well as he can behave in ways that reflect social connectedness. It appears to me that Adler also allowed for ambivalence and the occurence of seemingly contradictory behavior; however, through his concept of dynamic unity he showed that this ambivalence can always be seen as serving the purpose of pursuing the fictitious goal of the life plan, rather than evidencing the existence of two or more different 'entities' at odds with each other.
