Adlerian counseling does not focus on symptoms, but on the style of life and goal of the individual. (Our job is not to merely blow away smoke, but to put our the fire.) Consequently, we do not generally have recommended “techniques” for dealing with suicidal clients. We try to find out what problem or goal might be causing the symptom. We also consider the impact of the symptom on family members. Is this impact valuable to the client?
Socratic questioning can work effectively with anyone of normal intelligence, regardless of age. Young children respond quite well to this approach. They like the experience of a very diplomatic adult approaching them with a feeling of equality and respect for their intelligence.
