Metaphor therapy is a methodology developed by Richard Kopp. His initial terminology was "The Metaphoric Transformation of Reality" which I feel more aptly describes what is done. The therapist looks for a metaphor (or simile) in what the patient is saying that is appropriate to the needed change in the life style goal of the patient, then invites the patient to explore that metaphor and change it to a more useful direction. Richard has published a book "Metaphor Therapy" which describes this method with great precision. I video taped some of his early presentations as he was developing these notions. Used in a classical Adlerian therapy, it could be a powerful tool in providing the "Missing Developmental Experience" or with thoughtful and cautious guidance from the therapist, can be a powerful tool "away from his Life Style". I find it of value in the later stages of therapy. "Meta" is from the Greek whic means "over" and "phorein" (?sp) is the Greek word for to drag or carry over. It is a notion similar in some ways to the Freudian notion of "Transference" but in a more fundamental way.
