I agree with you that many school teachers are confused in fostering self esteem.

It could be. However it also could be something different. For example, for a child who aspires to achieve too much, because he might have intended to achieve more than what the teacher said, he may feel being criticized. Or for a kid who is always humiliated, he might feel it encouraging thus can be beneficial for self esteem.
