Metaphors, as one form of many expressions of an individual's style of life, are integrated into a unified, self-consistent portrait. Typically, we compare all physical, intellectual, and emotional expressions for their common denominator. Read chapter 8 (Psychology of Use) in "The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler," edited by Heinz and Rowena Ansbacher. Also look at "Metaphor Therapy" by Richard R. Kopp.
