I recently read "Holism and Evolution" by Smuts. I, too, noticed a similarity between the general thinking of Adler and Smuts. It seems to me that Smuts attempts to understand the goal of evolution from a philosophical perspective, whereas, Adler attempts to understand it from a psychological one. I know of no texts or resources that develop this connection explicitly. To my mind, both seem to be thinking within an existential philosphical perspective.
