Linda, Adlerian psychotherapy penetrates the unconscious more effectively than other approaches by identifying and de-mystifying the guiding power of the unconscious fictional final goal. As a temporary, intermediate strategy, following and using a client's metaphors can certainly be helpful to maintain contact and promote fuller expression. However, unless the therapist realizes the potential of the metaphor for perceptual distortion and emotional self-intoxication (in the direction of the fictional final goal), the important focus of recognizing the purpose of all expressions will be diluted.
