I will give you some basic principals with out references but if you look in some basic texts on Adler you will find things similar to what I will say. Behavior is goal directed. There is no such thing as conflicted behavior; it only appears conflicted until we understand the how the individual perceives their underlying goal. The goal is to overcome the environment and survive or to gain superiority over it. The meaning one gives to this goal is individual and unique. This striving for superiority is what is the source of not only behavior but life it self. If you study this, be careful not to assume that superiority is a simplistic principal. It is a very large and dynamic concept as taught by Adler.
