Racism or Personal Responsibility
“African Americans have the highest unemployment rate of any ethnic group in America, and the disparity is raising eyebrows.
“According the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the black unemployment rate hovers at 16.1 percent – compared with 8 percent among whites, 11.8 percent among Hispanics, and 6.4 percent among Asians. The most recent figures pin the total unemployment rate at 9 percent.
“There is not a consensus, however, on the reasons behind the disparity, which Dr. Boyce Watkins has labeled “The Great Black Disconnect,” wherein blacks disassociate their plight from the president’s inaction – yet might fail to put energy into his reelection…”
Boyce Watkins, Huffington Post: The Great Black Disconnect from Obama
“President Obama has a problem, a very serious one. The president's problem is what I would call "The Great Black Disconnect." This divide is the place where black America's love and appreciation for the Obamas disconnects from the intense economic suffering of the African American community. Like a festering and infected wound that remains untreated, President Obama's support within the black community is threatened by the fact that the people who love him most are suffering unlike anything our nation has seen over the last 50 years…”
Victor Davis Hanson, Pajamas: End Affirmative Action
“We have had about a half-century of racial preferences and often unspoken but real quotas for hiring and admission based on racial identity. If the original intent was to level the playing field for African-Americans and Latinos, who had been subject to systematic and often gratuitously mean discrimination throughout much of the American South and Southwest, nonetheless the current rationale for sustaining affirmative action has become a veritable nightmare of contradictions, biases, and incoherence that is now well beyond reform. Conservatives mostly believe this; an increasing number of liberals quietly think it…”
James Brody: About School
Tom Sowell’s thoughts apply in several contexts drawn by Dr. Boyce Watkins and by Victor Davis Hanson. Sowell argues that blacks can achieve as well as whites and cites examples. His conclusion is that schools have failed, not students.
Other scholars remind us of a fifteen point gap between the IQs of American blacks and American whites, a durable finding and a gap that is associated with impulsive conduct, a limited “sense of the future,” and recurrent vocational and moral lapses. It is also associated with filled cells and the unwillingness of women to support the apparently useless guy who got them pregnant. Further, no one wants to admit the failure of modern schools to recognize that fewer than twenty percent of high school graduates—of any color—are capable of college work. Parents who buy college so their hellion can grow up find that four or five years later, they’re broke and he’s still a hellion.
Community colleges are not a solution. Eighty-eight percent of students do not return for a second year after failing the first. Charters, trade schools, and Internet courses appear more realistic rather than more rows of boys and girls copying what the teacher said and not knowing what she meant or why they copied it.
